The Cycling Olympus
El Poble Nou de Benitatxell is located in a strategic setting distinguished by the beauty of its coastline and the tranquillity of its inland landscape. In the Marina Alta region, halfway between Valencia and Alicante, it sits atop a hill crowned by the church, whose distinctive silhouette makes the town centre recognisable from several kilometres away.
To the south, the municipality is sheltered by Puig Llorença, which drops steeply towards the sea, giving rise to striking rock formations, cliffs and remarkable coves. To the north, the town opens onto the region, with Montgó close on the horizon.
El Poble Nou de Benitatxell also enjoys a mild, pleasant climate throughout the year, ideal for cycling in any season. As a result, many enthusiasts follow routes such as Ruta de Calistros or Ruta del Puig Llorença. The experience can be rounded off with local cuisine that revives healthy, traditional produce and recipes, such as cocas, putxero and the emblematic arròs amb fava pelà.
Why the Cycling Olympus?
Olympus, a mountain of white snow, lush vegetation and steep rock faces, was home to Zeus and the twelve most important Greek deities. From the heights of the Hellenic mountain, gods and goddesses ruled over land and sea and decided the fate of mortals. The people of Greece revered the place and considered it paradise. Thousands of years later, cycling enthusiasts can enjoy a new Olympus in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell.
Like Greek mythology, Benitatxell also has its own summit: Alt del Puig Llorença. Cyclists reach this mountain after a major effort, overcoming gradients of almost 20%, a true challenge for cycling enthusiasts and difficult for most mortals to conquer. Just as from Mount Olympus, Puig Llorença offers exceptional views of sea and land. From the heights, cyclists discover rugged cliffs and idyllic coves bathed by the Mediterranean, as well as a panorama of the Marina Alta towns forming a mosaic of Muscat grapevines, almond trees and Mediterranean vegetation.
El Poble Nou de Benitatxell offers cycling for individuals and families in peaceful, welcoming and idyllic surroundings. For all these reasons, Benitatxell is a cycling Olympus.
Calistros-Abiar
The route runs close to the town centre. Along the way, it reveals the charm of a rural landscape shaped by ravines, hollows and terraced hills dotted with traditional agricultural buildings such as riuraus. Vineyards predominate, particularly those growing Muscat grapes.

Puig Llorença
Puig Llorença is already an established cycling summit. The 2015 Vuelta Ciclista a España stage that finished at its summit brought it to the attention of cyclists and visitors alike. The climb up Puig features some very steep gradients and offers spectacular views over a coastline of coves and towering cliffs.
